The Contact Sheet
June 2004
Past Issues

Happy 1st Birthday to us! I started SingleShots last June not knowing if people would respond to my idea of getting a professional photo to help them out in their pursuit of love online. Within two weeks of hanging my “singles shingle”, we were in the New York Times, the Daily News, Time Out NY, CNN, and business was booming. It’s been an amazing year, and I want to thank all the people who took a chance to come to us, even though they hated getting their photo taken more than anything else on earth (including going to the dentist). Of the over 600 people I’ve photographed, many have found love and some are still looking, but it’s become clear that having a great photo really makes the difference between having a positive or negative experience online. Have a wonderful summer!
Best,
Mindy

Before and After of the Month:

Before After

What’s wrong with this “before”?

Direct sunlight creates harsh, unflattering shadows on your face and deadens your eyes. Shoot on an overcast day or in even shade. Also, the rusty rail in the background contrasts too strongly with how nicely dressed she is. Think about the image you want to convey about yourself when you choose your background.

Upcoming Event Reminders:

92nd St Y

This Thursday, June 17th, we’ll be speaking and shooting at the 92nd St Y on the Upper East Side. You’ll get a chance to work one on one with Evan Mark Katz of E-cyrano.com, and sit for a portrait, which you can purchase later if you like the image. Evan has also written a helpful book about how to get the most out of online dating: I Can't Believe I'm Buying This Book: A Commonsense Guide to Successful Internet Dating, which will be on sale at the event. The workshop is $35.00. To sign up, go to: http://www.92y.org/. You can also enter code: LS3CL02-01 at the top of the page to quickly purchase the workshop.

Social Circles

On June 29th, we’ll be reprising our Social Circles online dating event, where we’ll team up again with PersonalsTrainers.com to help everybody improve their profiles and get a new photo. Call Lisa Quattlebaum at 212-505-9985 ext. 203 if you’re interested in attending the event or finding out more about Social Circles. If you tell them we sent you, you’ll get 10% off the membership fee.

What They’re Saying:

Hey Mindy,
I have to thank you for my pictures. They have totally changed my life. Right now I am dating 3 guys, yes 3 guys and talking to a few more via email. Totally amazing what a picture can do.

I hope all is well with you, and will continue to pass your name to singles in need of your help.
Stacey

Off You Go:

If you’re a theater lover and you’d like to meet other singles who would also never miss the Tony awards, check out the Sunday on Broadway: Sight Unseen & Reception next Sunday, June 20. You can check out Laura Linney in Sight Unseen, a play written by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies and directed by Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan. I saw the original production in 1992, which also starred Laura Linney in a different role. It was a great show; Donald Margulies is one of my favorite playwrights.

During the run of each Broadway show at The Biltmore, The Manhattan Theater Club hosts a Singles reception with food and drinks (wine and soda) following the performance. Join a group from Social Circles who are going together—the tickets and reception are $75.00, and you can contact Lisa Quattlebaum at 212-505-9985 ext. 203 to sign up.

Promotions:

“Happy Birthday Dear Singleshots…”

In honor of our one year anniversary, we’re offering 10% off all our packages if you mention that you saw this promotion in our newsletter.

If you're a new client, we are also continuing to offer our Bring a Friend promotion: if you book a session with a friend, both people will receive a free upgrade. Under our Refer a Friend promotion, past clients who continue to help pass the word on about SingleShots receive a free 5x7 print or web photo if their friend books a session with us.

Site Unseen:

VeggieConnection.com

I’ve had a number of vegetarian clients mention to me that it’s important that their partner is also a vegetarian. I recently discovered this site that will make it lot easier for those of you who eschew meat to find each other in cyberspace. In your profile you can specify whether you’re semi-Vegetarian, vegetarian, vegan, a raw foodist, or macrobiotic, so there’s no more risking whether your first online date will take you a steakhouse by accident.

About SingleShots:

SingleShots, the first photo studio dedicated to online portraits, knows how important a photo is in the online dating world, and yet how hard it seems to find a photo of yourself that you like enough to represent you. SingleShots takes photos that are relaxed and flattering-the best version of you on a great day. Meeting the right person is hard enough…why not give it your best shot?
